The Back-to-School programme of Society for Women and Youths Affairs (SWAYA) stated in 2008 in communities in Rivers State as an annual event. The objective of the programme is to motivate indigent children at the primary school level of the Nigerian educational system who are willing to get educated but lack the necessary support to be in school. The programme also targets pupils who lack books, foot-wears, uniforms, schoolbags, and other educational materials in the process of getting basic education and secure their future for a better society as women and youths. Society for Women and Youths Affairs acknowledges and recognizes the challenges that most parents are facing in communities in the Niger Delta and other parts of Nigeria in sending their children to acquire basic education thus steps in the gap to support and encourage future women and youths at this level.
In 2008, the programme was launched in Zor-Sogho Community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State. At the event, over fifty (50) pupils of Community Primary School in Zor-Sogho benefited from the programme and received schoolbags, foot-wears, uniforms and other educational materials. Other communities where the annual programme has held between 2008 and 2016 include Beeri and Wiiyaakara communities in Khana Local Government; Bodo City Community in Gokana Local Government Area; Rumubiakani Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area and XYZ in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State. So far, over one thousand four hundred (1,400) pupils have benefited from the Back-To-School programme. Efforts are being made to extend and expand the programme to other communities in Rivers State, other parts of the South-South (Niger Delta region) and other Nigeria states.
So far, SWAYA had received support and sponsorship/funding from individuals and organisations within and outside Nigeria. They include Azlom Multiventures Ltd, Waifang Leader-Dredgers, China, etc.
